10 High Frequency Benefits of Mercury Retrograde
Nov 04, 2024People tend to freak out and assume the worst when Mercury, or any planet for that matter, goes retrograde. But I am here to tell you, that retrogrades are NOT bad - we just need to know how to work with the energy in order to make the most out of these very common cosmic cycles.
What exactly is Mercury Retrograde?
Mercury is said to be in retrograde when it appears to go backward in its orbit. It doesn't actually change directions in the sky. This is an optical illusion because Mercury takes just 88 days to circle the Sun compared with Earth's 365 days.
In astrology, Mercury rules the part of us which absorbs information and transmits that information to others. Mercury also rules our thoughts, communication, mindset, learning style, decision-making, sense of humor, and merchants and commerce. In medical astrology, Mercury is associated with the nervous system (which may be why people get nervous when it goes retrograde), the lungs, and upper extremities.
Mercury is quick moving, spending only 14-30 days in each sign, depending on retrograde cycles. Mercury takes roughly one year to transit all 12 signs of the zodiac.
During Mercury Retrograde cycles, the normal flow of energy is reversed. Ideas and thoughts seem to get stuck in our mind, instead of easily pouring out to others.
It is a common misconception and, I believe, a literal PsyOp that is unfortunately perpetuated in pop culture and mainstream astrology alike that retrogrades are "bad."
Repeat after me: "RETROGRADES ARE NOT BAD!"
Retrogrades are a normal part of the cycle of life and such a powerful tool for receiving messages - Mercury is "The Messenger of The Gods" - and for engaging in what I call "RE-MAGIC."
Now let's talk about how to make the most out of these Mercury Retrogrades that happen several times each year.
10 High Frequency Benefits of Mercury Retrograde
1. It's easier to reboot healthy goals and habits
Mercury Retrograde is a great time to revisit your health goals or habits that may need to be revised and rebooted. It's a great time for cosmic do-overs, especially related to calming the nervous system, breathwork and health goals in general.
2. Inner work during this time gives us clarity
During all retrograde cycles, not just Mercury Retrograde, we tend to be more internally focused. Since Mercury rules our thoughts, this internal focus can actually give us a great deal of clarity and supports inner work like journaling, writing, or meditation practices.
3. New mantras or affirmations adopted during this time are super-powered
Mercury Retrogrades are a perfect time to try out new mantras or affirmations and use all that extra internal mental energy to reprogram your subconscious and conscious minds. Are they limiting beliefs or negative self-talk that has been plaguing you? We all have that nasty inner saboteur, ya dig? The good news is Mercury Retrogrades come along several times every year to help you clean up your self-talk and mantras and affirmations are an easy tool to use.
4. Creativity is amplified
All that extra mental activity and messages can be channelled into all sorts of creative outlets during Mercury Retrogrades. Get creative with all areas of your life and put that inspiration to good use.
5. Extra mental energy forces us to get grounded in the body and the intuition
In order to avoid heightened anxiety and to balance all the extra inward thought processes, we are kinda forced to focus even more on being present and grounded in our bodies during Mercury Retrogrades. The good news is the more we balance mental and physical energies, the more easily we can tap into the voice of our soul - the intuition.
6. It's a great time to problem solve
We have all had those experiences during Mercury Retrogrades where some minor car trouble or technological issues occurred, or we had some kind of misunderstanding in communication. Hey, it happens and it's nothing to worry about. Mercury Retrogrades go a lot smoother when we take a solution-focused perspective and practice patience with ourselves, others, and technology.
7. Increased ability to get or give closure
Since there is such an inward, mental focus during Mercury Retrograde it is an excellent time to get or give ourselves closure around a challenging situation or revisit some loose ends that need tidying up. You can also more easily give yourself the gift of closure by changing your thoughts and practicing #3 on this list.
8. Great time to detox from technology and social media
Mercury Retrogrades are an important reminder to detox from technology completely and social media - or at least rely on it less. It will glitch out on you, if you don't glitch out on it first!
9. Spiritual messages and signs increase
Mercury (Roman) is "The Messenger of The Gods" and is associated with Hermes (Greek) and Thoth (Egyptian). During Mercury Retrogrades spiritual messages, insights, and signs tend to increase. Pay attention and write them down - you might get even more clarity on what these messages mean once Mercury stations direct at the end of the retrograde cycle.
10. It's an opportunity to tap into "RE-MAGIC"
"Re-Magic" is a term I coined since I love to make up words (lol). Mercury retrograde is a beautiful time to tap into this re-magic and redo, revise, reflect, revisit, replenish, re-engage, recharge, and remember who you truly are and how magical your mind really is when you use it for its highest good.
Embrace the Mercury Retrograde Magic!
